Portland, Oregon
Portland is a top-rated destination in the Pacific Northwest, thanks to its beautiful green spaces and deliciously varied food scene. There are more than 100 craft beer breweries within the Portland metropolitan area. Call it Stumptown or the City of Roses, Bridge City or PDX, the city is full of cultural opportunities and has become a dream for urbanites. It boasts some of the most pedestrian-friendly streets anywhere in the country. Many of these streets are lined with food carts that provide Portland with some of best street food, including some of the most delicious and affordable.
You can also find plenty of trails to bike and miles of forest hikes and water sports along Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The most popular attractions are the low-key, intangible ones: a cup of coffee from a local brewery, a chat with friends at the end of the day, or a walk through an open gallery on the first Thursday of each month. Portland is a vibrant city that is hip, unrelentingly innovative, and alternative.
Best Time to Visit
Portland's best season is June through August. The city's outdoor culture thrives in the consistently warm summer months. Summer is also when the roses in Portland, especially at the International Rose Test Garden, are at their peak. This is the peak tourist season so it's a good idea to book at least two months in advance. Winter trips are a great way to save money on hotels.
Although cold temperatures can repel sight-seekers, Portland's close proximity to Mount Hood makes it an ideal destination for winter sports fans. You'll find many local events no matter the season. If you want to avoid the tourist crowds, come to Portland between November and March.
Pro Tip
Start your exploration with the all-time-favorite bacon maple bar or something topped with a favorite childhood sweet, including Cap’n Crunch and Tang.
Airport
With exclusive flight tickets, get down at Portland International Airport. It is a joint civil–military airport and the largest airport in the US state of Oregon, within Portland's city limits just south of the Columbia River in Multnomah County, 6 miles (10 kilometers) by air and 12 mi (19 km) by highway northeast of downtown Portland.
Best Things to Do
Tour Washington Park
Portland’s signature park isn’t just loaded with big trees and picnic tables. Located a mere two miles west of downtown and accessible by MAX light rail, 410-acre Washington Park offers up a zoo, two museums, a spectacular rose garden, one of the most authentic Japanese gardens in the world, all bordered by Forest Park — at 5,100 acres, one of the country’s premier urban wildernesses.
Visit International Rose Test Garden
More than 10,000 individual rose bushes bloom in the International Rose Test Garden from late May through October, representing over 610 different rose varieties. The majority of roses in the Garden are commercially available. About 10 to 20 varieties are replaced each year with some of the best new roses released onto the market. Roses bloom from late May to October depending on the weather. The primary purpose of the Garden is to serve as a testing ground for new rose varieties. In the beginning, while World War I was raging, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland’s garden for testing.
Visit Portland Japanese Garden
Tucked into the scenic West Hills of Portland, above Washington Park and near the International Rose Test Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden is a haven of meticulously maintained, tranquil beauty. Proclaimed one of the most authentic Japanese gardens outside of Japan, the 5.5-acre space includes an authentic Japanese tea house, meandering streams, intimate walkways and an unsurpassed view of Mount Hood.
Explore Portland Saturday Market
Combining the vibes of an art show, a live street concert and an open-air bazaar, Portland Saturday Market has been a beloved Rose City tradition since 1974. In fact, the market is considered the largest continually operating arts-and-crafts fair in the United States, drawing up to 750,000 visitors during its annual season. On any given Saturday from the beginning of March to the day before Christmas, shoppers can tap their heels to bluegrass pickers and jazz musicians and sample ethnic eats like falafel or kielbasa while browsing wares handcrafted by more than 250 vendors.
Discover Portland's Forest Park
With 70 miles of trails, aptly named Forest Park is a popular escape for runners, cyclists, equestrians and hikers alike — leashed dogs are even allowed to enjoy its splendor. Located in the city’s northwest corner, this 8-mile-long conservancy covers 5,156 acres, providing a respite from urban life, supporting more than 112 bird and 62 mammal species and acting as a natural air purifier./p>
