Spirit Airlines is an ultra low cost airline with headquarters in Miramar, Florida. Initially beginning as Clippert Trucking Company in 1964, the company was changed to Charter One Airlines in 1983 with operations to several American cities. As the airline infrastructure developed, Charter One included jet carriers into the fleet and once again it changed its name to Spirit Airlines in 1992 scheduling flights to several other American cities along with Latin America and the Caribbean respectively.

Spirit currently flies to 88 destinations throughout Central America, the Caribbean, South America, and the United States. It maintains crew bases at Atlantic City, Chicago–O'Hare, Dallas/Fort Worth, Detroit, Fort Lauderdale, Las Vegas, and Orlando.

Spirit Inflight Experience

In Spirit Airlines, snacks and drinks are not included in the fare. The flight menu provides a variety of snacks, combo meals and beverages at a price on all flights. Passengers can opt for muffins, pot noodles and chips.

Seating: Spirit Airline's airliners can hold 145 (Airbus A319-100), 178 (Airbus A320-200), and 218 passengers (Airbus A321-200). The seats assigned at counter check-in are free, however seat assignments start at just $5 and vary according on the route and cabin. The Large Front Seats are in the front rows of the aircraft and, for an extra fee, offer up to 32% more legroom than the Deluxe Leather. Up to 24 hours before departure, seats can be reserved.

Spirit Airlines Cabin Interior

Spirit Airline offers coach class only. The upgraded, new cabin features spacious room and seats, a big tray table with pre-recline on every row. The redesigned interior design features carpet and a new signage. The innovative ergonomical-designed seats are padded with light weighted foam to offer utmost comfort. The seat enhancement offer added two inch legroom compared to standard fleets with almost the same pitch.

In addition, Spirit has added big front seats that features newly crafted headrest with comfortable foam and seat cushion for thigh support.

  • The new seats have full-sized tray tables.
  • Experience new galley carts that weigh 4 pounds less than existing carts, and each new seat is 2.6 pounds lighter, savings hundreds of pounds per flight and maintaining high fuel efficiency.
  • Middle seats possess extra inch of width and every seat will have nearly an inch of pre-recline, compared to Spirit’s current seating configuration, with exit rows adding even more.
  • The redesigned interior will be installed on nearly 150 new Airbus A320 Family aircraft, being delivered to Spirit over the next several years. Additionally, Spirit will update the interiors of aircraft cycling through scheduled maintenance.
Current Fleet

Spirit Airlines currently operates a fleet of 67 Airbus, with an average age of 4.8 years. Spirit, behind Virgin America and the Mexican airline Volaris, has the third-youngest Airbus fleet in the Americas. In October 2013, Spirit and International Lease Finance Corporation (ILFC) agreed to a lease for three pre-owned A319s and five further A320 NEOs. For continued growth, Spirit Airline ordered 30 Airbus A320-200 aircraft in 2006; deliveries of the aircrafts started in March 2010.

Spirit Airlines Baggage Allowance

Spirit Airlines charges for both checked and carry-on bags, and they charge more for luggage that weights more than 40 lbs. One personal item that fits in the smaller sizer box is included in the ticket price; anything larger must be purchased separately. Carrying a carry-on bag costs $26 when booking or checking in online, $36 when paying at the airport, and $50 when doing so. First checked bags cost between $21 and $30 when booked online, second bags cost between $31 and $40, and third through fifth bags cost between $76 and $85. The cost of paying at the airport is rather expensive.

Spirit Airlines check-in

Spirit Airlines passengers can choose between checking in online and doing so at the airport's kiosks. For domestic flights, the counter opens two hours before departure and closes 45 minutes before takeoff; for international flights, the counter opens three hours before departure and closes 60 minutes before scheduled departure. When checked in at the desk, each boarding pass has a $10 printing fee. 24 hours before to departure and one hour prior to departure are the times for check-in. Passengers can buy luggage and select their preferred seats while checking in online.
